For a number of reasons, many people choose to buy an older home rather than a new home. They may be attracted to the lower cost of an older home, or perhaps they enjoy the history associated with owning an older home. When buying an older home, however, people must be aware of the potential dangers they are exposing themselves to.
The main danger is the possible presence of abestos in the home Asbestos is material which is highly resistant to fire. Because of this property, asbestos was commonly used as a construction material. The problem is that over time asbestos breaks apart into tiny airborne dust particles, which then can enter our lungs. Once in the lungs, asbestos is known to cause many serious diseases, most notably cancer. While the use of asbestos in building construction is now banned in most countries, the material is present in almost any building that was built before the 1980s. Asbestos can be removed from older buildings, but it is a costly procedure. Inmost cases, if asbestos is present in a building, it is covered with another material to prevent it from entering the air, although this is only effective as long as the building remains in one piece. When the building is demolished, or when serious work is done on the building, asbestos can once again be a danger.
Another common health danger in older homes is the presence of lead. Lead was an ingredient in many paints until 1978 in the US, and even later in some countries. Lead becomes a danger when paint containing lead breaks off the walls and is eaten. This is primarily a danger to small children, who do not know any better than to eat paint chips. Once it has been eaten, lead causes severe learning disabilities. As with asbestos, lead paint can be removed from a building, but again it can be costly to do so.
